As you may already know, the most recent work to come from Richard Hodgekins is his Double A-side single called Where do we go from here? / Two steps ahead. Coming soon (release date to-be-announced), will be Richard's debut album Where do we go from here? UP and the new single Do you believe in magic? But as we eagerly await these new releases, I thought I'd share my thoughts on the Double A-side single and welcome you to share yours.

I absolutely LOVE both tracks!

I find the piano so dreamy and the vocals so powerful within Where do we go from here? I also admire the meaning hidden in the lyrics and how the song asks such an important question and gives an answer of hope.

However, I have a strong connection to Two steps ahead simply because of the lyrics. To me, this song is the perfect example of true love. I really have a connection to this piece and it's timeless lyrics portraying such unconditional love for another.

=====================

Two steps ahead

When your heart's on the line
and your body is shaking
Come to me
When your soul hits the ground
and your mind's losing track
Come to me

When your life's out of sync
and you being is empty
Come to me
When the world's on your back
and your smile, it has left you
Come to me

I will be there
when it all falls away
I will be there
when I know that you need it
I'll pick up the pieces

When the streets are on fire
and the miles keep on turning
You come to me
When your tired all the time
and love, it has left you
You come to me

I will be there
when it all falls away
I will be there
When I know that you need it
I'll pick up the pieces

One life and I'll save it
One heart and I'll mend it
One body and I'll hold it
Whenever you need it I'll pick up the piece

I'm two steps ahead
Two steps ahead
Two steps ahead

When you hearts on the line
and your body it is shaking
Come to me
I got your back
I got you back
I'm two steps ahead

=====================

Well, these are a few of my thoughts that I thought I would share with you and I'd love to hear yours.

I think Where do we go from here? is really good. I just can't get enough of Richard's strong singing. It's captivating. Also when the song goes all quiet and it's just the male and female voice it's a really powerful moment. Although Two Steps Ahead is great Where do we go from here? just has the power that makes my hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

The message within the song "Where do we go from here?" is powerful and thought provoking. I think it's a question that we all ask ourselves from time to time. Where do I go from here? Where do I go next? What direction am going? And I think that this question is asked by us all alike; no matter your gender, class, race, religion, or age. I think that this is eluded to in the song by using symbols like the Soldier and old battle plans. You almost get a sense of a struggle through life and realizing that you can't always follow the "plan" that sometimes you just have to go deeper into the meaning of life itself. It is a journey of life and within this journey as we make our way, we are constantly asking ourselves where to next? Now, that question in itself is a powerful thought to put into a musical piece, but it doesn't stop there. Does every question have an answer? Well, just like the lyrics say in the song, if you listen very carefully you'll hear it. The future is here, it says, like announcing the fact that if we don't stop to listen we may miss it. Such an amazing song!

I got to say that I love the band performance in Two Steps Ahead. The rhythmic acoustic guitar and shaker combination is wicked! But I could say the same thing about Where Do We Go From Here too because when the full band comes in it really lifts the piece.

I think the instrumentation Richard uses in his work is really unique. Although it's only a guitar or drums or piano at times, it still somehow always sounds different and special. Do you know what I mean? It's not jsut a regular band sound, it's a sound un-to-itself and kind of hits you straight in the middle of the chest.

I look forward to hearing the instrumentation on the album because I've read that he's expanding even further on this one with strings and things. huh.gif

Nothing tugs at my heart strings more than soul-churning piano and that's exactly why Where do we go from here? is in my top 10 songs. Like the first post says, the piano is so dreamy in this song and really creates a warm sound that surrounds you like the music is wrapping you up in a blanket.

and as for Two steps ahead....I literally can't get it out of my head. It's got that catchy melody and everytime I think of it I think of the video. REALLY COOL video! If anyone hasn't seen the videos for the songs yet, go to Richard Hodgekins Youtube Channel

I'm with the Girl in the Red Shoes, I absolutely love both songs. They both speak to me but in entirely different ways. Where do we go from here...I love the hidden messages like "under the piano cords" and the "rose lays within the land". It took me awhile to figure those out, but I think I have it now. I love, love, love the duet. There is such passion there...makes my hair stand on end. Two steps ahead is lively, yet quietly romantic. The kind of words I would sing to my lover...if I could ever be that poetic! The lyrics appeal to me, but so does the music. I think I could easily listen to the music even without the lyrics.

All in all, I love Richard's work and I can't wait to hear more.

I so want to hear Richard's new album....
Does anyone know if Richard has ever performed in Canada? I would love to see and hear him perform live.
I love Where do we go from here? and Two Steps Ahead.
I purchased them both from iTunes. I would love to make them into ring tones so I can share them with everyone else. Maybe if I can get enough Canadians emailing him he'll come to Canada!!

Well, do I have to say anything, or does my name say it all! wink.gif

Yes, yes, yes, I am hooked on Two steps ahead, so much so that I actually named myself after it on this forum. tongue.gif

I am a big fan of Richard's older work though and still listen to the old single all the time. (long live Everytime I Breakdown) But I have to tell ya this new stuff is wicked!

Because Richard has personally moved out of the pain and darkness and into the light it has filtered into his music. These new songs are brighter and filled with positivity and hope. But not so much positivity that its not genunine if you know what I mean? It's still just as real as it ever was. Filled with emotion passion and power to say something really important. And nothins lacking in the music department either. It's all there.

What more could you want from a song?

And I agree with Musette the video is brilliant. Really adds to the piece as a whole.

Can't wait for the next thing, single or album. Do you believe in magic? is a great title.

Thanks you guys/gals for sharing your thoughts about the singles so far. It seems like everyone has a special thought or feeling that they get from the work and I've enjoyed reading what you guys/gals have to say.

To Maria, I just wanted to answer your question. No, Richard has never performed in Canada. In fact, he has only ever given ONE live performance, and that was a special show in England last March that was also broadcast live over the Internet. However, following the release of his debut album, Richard plans to take his music out into the world. And with the growing interest from people like yourself, he could be touring your area sooner than you think. But I will post here any updates about any performances or tours as soon as I know.

Anyway, thanks again everyone who has posted so far for sharing your thoughts and I look forward to reading more! So keep posting!

allo Burg here

thought i'd be stuck on Richard's old stuff forever but i'm out with the old and in with the new.

.....well....maybe not totally out with the old. i think i could still listen to Everytime i breakdown on repeat until i meet you-know-who up at the pearly gates but anyway my point is that I have slowly reached these new songs and I can't go back.

Gotta love this guy! One hell of a songwriter!

ok...yeah i tap my feet to the beats in Two steps ahead and sing the chorus in the shower to Where do we go from here? (although..i'm a guy..so i have trouble singing the girl's part) but above all i read the words. yes the ol' Burg actually reads. and i'll tell ya kids there are some great lyricso here!

i recommend anyone reading this to go to the site and download the track. but don't forget to also check Richard out on itunes because two of his older songs are on there also and sometimes you can't understand the future without understanding the past you know what i mean.

happy listening party berg yeah!

Well. I absolutely love both songs. There is a positive vibe to him. He has been nothing but encouragement to me in times I was at rock bottom. He reminds me ever so much of John Lennon, and yet it is Richard, all him. In a world where things spin out of control, his music has peace. Yes, I'll listen to some crazy wild stuff sometimes. But there is another side that needs that peace he is able to provide.
And he knows one day I'll get there. Not now, my music is still venting some steam...but once the steam is let out, there will be peace. With myself. He once told me he believes in me. Something I needed to hear at a time I could not at all believe in myself. Ability on guitar yes. Sometimes I felt it was the only thing I was good at. That, and self-sabotage.
I hope things are going well for him...it's been a while since I've heard from him.
I get sooo distracted.....
I am happy to have him in my life as a friend. And that he shares his love and talent.

Hi I am new here!

These songs really touch me and it is nice to see a man who can be both emotional and tactical.

His work leaves me speechless.
